Babymoon Ideas: How to Plan a Relaxing Babymoon
By Karina Duran, Travel Advisor and Mexico Specialist at 2 Getaway Travel
The best babymoon ideas are slow and simple: one beautiful place, a short flight, a prenatal massage, long meals and nowhere you have to be. Plan it for your second trimester and let someone else handle the details.
I grew up in Cancun and spent more than 10 years working on the resort side of the Riviera Maya before joining 2 Getaway Travel. I have watched a lot of couples arrive for their babymoon, and the happiest ones all had the same thing in common. They did not try to do everything. They picked one place, booked the spa, and let themselves rest.
This guide covers what a babymoon is, when to go, the babymoon ideas couples love most, what to skip while pregnant, and how to plan it safely.

What Is a Babymoon?
A babymoon is a relaxing trip parents-to-be take together before the baby arrives. Think of it as a honeymoon for this new chapter: one last getaway as a couple to rest, reconnect and celebrate before life gets wonderfully busy.
Some couples go big with an overwater bungalow. Others keep it simple with a long weekend a few hours from home. There is no wrong babymoon, as long as it is restful for the person who is pregnant.
When Is the Best Time for a Babymoon?
The best time for a babymoon is the second trimester, roughly weeks 14 to 28. Morning sickness has usually eased, you can still move around comfortably, and the risk of miscarriage or preterm labor is lower than at other points in pregnancy (Columbia Doctors).
A few timing rules I share with every couple:
Talk to your OB-GYN or midwife first. Every pregnancy is different, and your provider has the final word on whether and how far to travel.
Mind the airline cutoff. Most U.S. airlines allow domestic flights until around 36 weeks, and international limits can be earlier, so check your carrier's policy before you book (The Bump).
Cruises have stricter limits. The major cruise lines typically will not sail with guests who will be 24 weeks or further along by the end of the voyage. If a cruise is your dream babymoon, book it early in the second trimester.
Watch the calendar. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. For Mexico's Caribbean coast and most islands, December through May is the sweet spot.

12 Relaxing Babymoon Ideas
Wherever you go, these are the babymoon ideas couples tell us they remember most:
Book a couples spa day with a prenatal massage. Reserve before you arrive, since prenatal slots fill fast. Many resorts sell babymoon spa packages that bundle treatments.
Plan a beach maternity photo shoot. Golden hour on the sand makes for photos you will treasure. Most resorts can arrange a local photographer.
Have a private dinner on the beach. Ask the concierge or the resort's wedding team. It is one of my favorite babymoon surprises.
Take a sunset sail on calm water. Choose a larger boat on protected water and skip anything fast or bumpy.
Take a cooking class. Learn a local dish, then make it at home after the baby comes.
Float in shallow, calm water. A reef-protected beach is perfect for easy snorkeling or just floating.
Write letters to your baby. Spend a slow morning on your balcony writing to the little one you are about to meet.
Shop for something local for the nursery. In Mexico, I love handwoven blankets or a small piece of Talavera.
Upgrade your room. A swim-up suite, a private plunge pool or an overwater bungalow turns a simple trip into a once-in-a-lifetime one.
Book a wine-free tasting or chef's table. Many resorts and wine regions now offer alcohol-free pairings.
Take a slow morning walk. Sunrise on a flat beach is the most peaceful hour of the day.
Do absolutely nothing. A cabana, a book and a mocktail is a babymoon activity too.
What to skip while pregnant: hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms, plus the traditional Mayan temazcal sweat lodge you will see offered in the Riviera Maya. It is a beautiful ceremony, but the heat is intense, so save it for your next trip. Also skip scuba diving, ziplines, ATVs, high-altitude outings and anything with a hard landing.
Babymoon Planning Tips: How to Travel Safely While Pregnant
Get the green light from your provider. Bring a copy of your prenatal records and your provider's contact info.
Check the Zika map. As of this writing, the CDC reports no areas with a current Zika outbreak. For places with past or current Zika spread, the CDC recommends pregnant travelers talk with a health care provider before going (CDC). Pack a repellent your provider approves.
Buy travel insurance. Pregnancy makes plans less predictable. Look for coverage for medical care abroad and trip cancellation, and read the pregnancy terms closely. Ask us about travel insurance.
Keep flights short and move often. Choose nonstops, book an aisle seat, drink plenty of water and get up to walk regularly to help prevent blood clots.
Eat smart. Stick to fully cooked proteins, pasteurized cheeses and bottled or purified water. Tell your server you are pregnant; resort kitchens are used to it.
Stay cool. Plan beach time for mornings and late afternoons, rest in the shade midday, and keep a water bottle with you.
Know where the nearest hospital is. Popular resort areas like Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Los Cabos have private hospitals that serve international visitors. Your advisor can help you note the closest one.
Pick the right resort and room. Look for a walkable layout, great food, a quiet or adults-only setting and a strong spa. Ask for a room near the restaurants and pool, on a low floor or near the elevator.
